Every 15 minutes in the UK, a child will come into care. Many will have suffered neglect or abuse, all will experience trauma and loss. Each one deserves a home where they will be loved, nurtured and enabled to thrive, whether that’s through short-term or long-term foster care, with a new adoptive family or with a supported lodgings host. But more families are urgently needed to ensure all children and young people can grow up in the family and setting that is right for them.

Together we can find a home for every child who needs one.

Fostering

Almost 100,000 children are classified as looked after in the UK, an increase of 3% on last year. More than 80% of these children need to be cared for by a foster family, yet there is a shortage of 8,600 carers, both to meet this need and to account for carers who will retire in the year ahead. Fostering is an opportunity to give vulnerable children and young people a safe place in a stable and loving home while their own family is unable to look after them. There are many different forms of fostering, from emergency carers who care for children at short notice for a little while, to short-term carers who look after children for up to two-years while decisions can be made for their permanence, to long-term carers who welcome children into their family throughout their childhood – and beyond. Foster carers are needed for children of all ages, but there is often a particular need for families who are able to look after groups of siblings, children with disabilities or complex needs, children of Black and minority ethnic heritage, unaccompanied asylum-seeking children, and teenagers.

Adoption

For some children in care, adoption can be the right plan for them to have the family they need and around 4% of children in care will go on to be adopted. More than 3,000 children are currently waiting for an adoptive family in the UK, and more than a third have already been waiting at least eighteen months already. Many are over the age of three – they know they are waiting. Adoption is the opportunity to give each child a loving family to belong to for the rest of their lives, who will commit to them, nurture them and advocate for them, and give them a safe and settled home for good. Adoptive families are needed for children of all ages and both genders, but there is often a particular need for families who are able to adopt groups of siblings, children with disabilities or complex needs, children of Black and minority ethnic heritage, and children over the age of four.

Supported lodgings

Supported lodgings is a provision for young people aged 16+ whereby they live in a room in the house of a ‘host’ family, individual or couple. The young person has greater independence than in foster care, with the host holding less parental responsibility but tasked with providing emotional and practical support to the young person, including supporting them to develop practical skills for adulthood such as cooking and budgeting. Home for Good is in the process of developing supported lodgings as part of our third strand of work; Caring for Teenagers. This third strand will sit alongside our other two core strands; fostering and adoption. We intend to formally begin work in raising awareness of supported lodgings and helping to signpost enquiries in Spring 2022.
